Hypoestes, Splash Pink

Hypoestes, Splash Pink

Splash Select Series seeds are fast, easy to grow and most commonly sown directly outdoors, but can thrive year-round indoors as decor. For early starts, sow hypoestess seeds in peat pellets or starter trays 8 – 10 weeks before last frost. Keep seeds wet and dark until germination, which hypoestes seeds are known to take 14 – 28 days. Harden off seedlings if transplanting outside and plant in south end of the garden. Plant 2 – 3 Splash Select Series hypoestes seeds ¼” deep and 12” apart in organically rich, evenly moist, and well-drained soil in partial sun to partial shade. Splash Select Series hypoestes will not thrive in poorly ventilated gardens as it is susceptible to molds, and both powdery and downy mildew. Hypoestes has no serious pests. Plants will shoot 6” flower spikes in the summer, however, most gardeners prefer the polka dot leaves instead and will cut the shoots. Splash Select Series is a dwarfed variety and ought to be planted on the southern end of the garden to keep from being cast in shadow all season long. Splash Select Series hypoestes seeds mature in 77 – 84 days as an 8 – 10” tall dwarfed ground cover with a 12” spread of leafy coverage in their famously spotted leaves in a choice of Pink, Red, Rose, White, and Mix.

Hypoestes phyllostachya, or otherwise best known as the Polka Dot Plant, is native to the hot and humid climates of Madagascar, South Africa, and south east Asia. Polka Dot Plant is one of the most famous and recognizable decorative plants grown both indoors and out and in the UK it has been awarded the Royal Horticultural Society’s Award of Garden Merit. The specific name phyllostachya is translated from Latin as meaning “with a leaf spike”, referring to the 6” blooming spikes that may gardeners cut off to no eclipse the brightly colored Polka Dots.
